What Is Open Game Protocol?

Open Game Protocol (OGP) has officially launched, providing a revolutionary Web3 gaming platform that allows any token to power game economies. Founded by Zynga co-founder Justin Waldron, OGP introduces gamecoins—a new tradable asset designed to manage play-to-earn rewards simply and effectively, connecting players, developers, and token communities.

OGP is a chain-agnostic app layer enabling game developers to link their games with existing tokens from various blockchains. Central to the platform is the creation of gamecoins, tradable tokens that distribute rewards to players, developers, and community token holders.

For example, a community can stake a token like $FARTCOIN (a meme token on Solana). After hitting a staking target, a corresponding gamecoin (e.g., $GFARTCOIN) launches. Users reclaim their staked tokens and earn shares of the new gamecoin supply. Players then earn gamecoins by playing linked games—more gameplay leads to higher rewards for all.

Making Every Token Playable

OGP’s key innovation is turning any cryptocurrency token into usable in-game assets. Token holders can engage their coins through gameplay instead of just trading or staking in finance apps. By staking tokens like $WIF, users earn associated gamecoins ($GWIF), which can then be linked to games.

The community decides which games to boost and reward by staking gamecoins, effectively voting to increase a game’s ecosystem traction and rewards.

Built by a Gaming Veteran

Justin Waldron, the co-creator of Zynga hits like FarmVille and Words With Friends, spearheads OGP. He emphasizes the platform’s goal to reward players fairly and help developers grow sustainable gaming businesses without complex blockchain barriers.

OGP simplifies the integration process for developers—no need for heavy smart contract development or upfront token holdings. Communities build reward pools by staking existing tokens they already support.

Solving Crypto Gaming’s Incentive Problem

Web3 gaming has long faced a disconnect between gameplay quality and investor incentives. OGP aligns these by letting token communities directly fund game rewards, bypassing chain-level conflicts of interest.

Unlike many layer-2 chains that prioritize network activity over game success, OGP remains chain-agnostic and focused purely on rewarding game ecosystems. Launched on Solana, OGP plans to expand support to EVM-compatible chains soon.

How Gamecoins Work

A gamecoin acts as a governance and reward distribution token for a game ecosystem, not just an in-game currency. For instance, the FARTCOIN gamecoin governs how rewards flow back to the community, speculating on the growth of its game ecosystem.

Players, developers, and traders benefit from a game’s success, earning rewards proportionate to the gamecoin’s ecosystem growth.

Adding Games and Boosting Rewards

Anyone can add games to OGP in minutes—from AI-generated titles to AAA-quality experiences. When a gamecoin launches, all linked games become live, and increased gameplay boosts the rewards pool.

Users can stake gamecoins to boost games, increasing rewards and signaling which games deserve growth—creating a positive feedback loop for player engagement and rewards.

Current Games and Gamecoins on OGP

Popular titles include Network Cities (a city builder with a $162K+ reward pool), Fart Cities, and After Egypt (Milady Edition). Other active games like UP ONLY!, Warez Clicker, and Beetle Catcher maintain diverse reward pools and active player bases.

The leading gamecoin is Fartcoin Gamecoin ($GFARTCOIN), boasting a market cap over $830,000 and daily volume exceeding $1 million. Other notable gamecoins include ICM.RUN ($GICM), CITIES Gamecoin ($GCITIES), and Tsotchke Gamecoin ($GTSOTCHKE).

No Official OGP Token Yet

Currently, OGP does not have its own native token. The platform supports only community-launched gamecoins. Players should avoid unofficial tokens and follow official OGP sources for updates.

Supported wallets include Phantom, MetaMask, and Binance Wallet, allowing players to earn gamecoins by playing browser-based games without downloads.

Who’s Backing Open Game Protocol?

OGP benefits from a strong team and reputable investors spanning gaming and blockchain sectors, including 1kx, Sora Ventures, Strobe, Foresight Ventures, CMT Digital, Alliance VC, and Merit Circle.

Notable angel investors include former executives and founders from Coinbase, OKX, GSR, Bloq, Gitcoin, SUI, EigenLayer, and Binance.

The Future Vision

OGP aims to embed gaming directly into crypto wallets, allowing users to click a “play” button next to any token to instantly access related games. Waldron mentions interest from 30-40 wallet partners in integrating this feature, redefining wallets as hubs for gaming alongside trading and asset storage.
